As a Hackettstown doctor, I recommend that my patients incorporate exercise into their daily lives. Being an avid tennis player who plays 5-8 hours a week, I always look forward to watching the US Open. It is unfortunate that Venus Williams had to drop out of the US open due to Sjogren Syndrome. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects women. According to the Sjogren Syndrome foundation  at least 4 million people are affected by the disease.

Some symptoms include:
• Fatigue
• Dry Mouth
• Dry eyes
• Difficulty talking, chewing or swallowing
• Change in taste or smell
• Joint pain

Diagnosis of Sjogren syndrome

Diagnosis can take up to 6.5 years because the symptoms of Sjogren syndrome are similar to lupus, rheumatoid, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

There is no cure for Sjogren syndrome. There are immunosuppressive medications
that can help manage the disease. Some over the counter medicine can be used for dry mouth and dry eyes. Sjogren syndrome patients need to be monitored by a physician.

Hopefully Venus Williams diagnosis of Sjogren syndrome will increase the awareness of this autoimmune disease.
